Moons waxed and waned, the lilacs bloomed and died,
In the broad river ebbed and flowed the tide
Ships went to sea and ships came home from sea
And the slow years sailed by and ceased to be.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
WITHIN HIS REACH
The photos of Charlie Hill of Swinefleet
The riverside village of Swinefleet lies towards the southern end of Swinefleet Reach, the last long reach of the River Ouse before the sharp turn through Goole Bight and the final run up to the entrance locks of Goole. Charlie has been photographing the ships passing by his backdoor since the late 1940's, and his albums offer a wonderful record of the variety and development of shipping in the Ouse over more than a half-century. Charlie is still out-and-about on the riverbank and at Goole and the Humber Ports, adding today's ships to those of yesterday and yesteryear.
