SPECIAL FEATURE
HAMBURG, KIEL / KIEL CANAL, LUEBECK AND TRAVEMUNDE, JUNE 2008
DAY 1 - HAMBURG
We took the morning 'Grosse Hafenrundfahrt' then the local ferry to Finkenwerder where spent the afternoon in a park overlooking the approaches to the port, with sun and increasing cloud, and a strengthening westerly wind!
Hamburg tugs & miscellaneous
DAY 2 - KIEL, KIELER FÖRDE and the KIEL CANAL, then to TRAVEMÜNDE
With a rather rainy start, we took the round trip down the Förde to Laboe and back, by which time the weather had improved ... then to the Canal bank for an afternoon of ships, sunshine and heavy showers! Stopped off at Travemunde on the way back in the early evening, for pizza and a few more ships.

Kiel Canal (Nord-Ostsee Kanal)
We settled at the foot of a wooded slope still within sight of Holtenau, with a bend in the canal to the left of us. Little sun, and occasional heavy showers which drove us like woodland folk back into the trees for shelter! But 18 ships in a few hours kept the cameras clicking, especially with the bonus of two cruise ships at the end of the afternoon.
.... and so to Travemünde for some evening movements (and pizza)
DAY 3 - LUEBECK, the RIVER TRAVE and TRAVEMÜNDE
We took the 10.30 ferry/excursion vessel from Luebeck to Travemünde, arriving at 12.00 and taking the 16.00 back, this was an excellent platform for viewing the shipping along this scenic river. Travemünde was buzzing with ferries and the bonus of a cruise ship.

... and so ended our three-day adventure, thanks to Richard for the research and bookings and to him and Mike for gallantly driving on the wrong side of the road and the wrong side of the gear lever!
